1187 Piston replacement, old versus new style

The piston on my 1989 Remington 1187 lost a square chunk right next to where the split in it is. It looks like it is missing a tooth now. I see the parts available on line and am wondering if the new style piston/piston seal is any better than the old style? I plan on replacing both parts.

Thanks for posting this info. I didn't realize there was a parts redesign and I've ordered the newer parts for spares. I don't know if older is better than newer; vice-versa; or no difference.

I found this in a 2010 post on this forum. I am going to call Remington tomorrow to find out if the new part is ok on my 1989 1187.

"After not being able to determine exactly what to get for my 1187 I called Remington back and found out the first person I talked to was correct in stating that I needed the "old style" piston and piston seal, but was wrong in stating that Remington didn't make them anymore - They Do! So I ordered my replacement and got it in 4 days in the mail."
 
Remington quit making the old style, but then started again due to demand. The new style is cheaper to make, but it does not seal as well as the old style, particularly where there is any wear on the mag tube. Both styles will fit all 1100s and 11-87s.
 
Thank you for that information Virginian. I called Remington and did order the old style. One thought was the one good piece I have , the piston seal, will work as a temporary spare if needed in the future. Remington says both styles work on my 1989 and offered no reason for the change to the one piece design which is really two pieces that snap together. Brownells has a video of the new style installation.
