An 8 shot extension will be even with a 20" barrel.
A 9 shot will stick out beyond a 21" inch barrel.
Note that some suppliers advertise extensions by the TOTAL number of rounds the extension will hold, OR by the number of rounds it will ADD to the magazine.
In your case you need a +3 or total of 8 rounds extension.
