1100 loading failure

This may be a question that belongs in the 'smith forum, but I am checking with shotgunners first to see if it is not something simple.

When I cock my 1100, it pulls the shell from the magazine but does not pop it up into position to be slid forward into the chamber. The shell simply stays in the lower receiver and the cocking lever will not move forward unless I manually release it. Does anyone know what might cause this jam? Is anything broken or missing? Thanks a lot, Shane

A bit late at night to break out the 1100 and test my recollection, but....

You have to stroke the bolt handle back hard and fast to get it to load from crusier ready.

The 1100 is designed to operate that way. Pull back on the cocking handle, and the bolt will hold open. To close the bolt, depress the silver button on the loading port. The bolt should not slide back and forth if you pull back on the cocking handle.

Thanks! So only the force of the blast will autoload the shell, and NOT by working the bolt by hand, correct? So to unload the gun, I have to pull the bolt back and hit the button on the loading gate for each shell in order for that shell to chamber? (I guess if I had a manual, it would explain all of this).

I thought of a better way to clarify my question. On an autoloading pistol, you don't have to hit the slide release for every round in order for it to chamber. You hit the slide release to chamber the first round (if the chamber is empty and the slide is locked back). So why would I have to hit the button on the loading gate (slide release) EVERY time I want to chamber a round in my 1100?

Shootin' Shane: Have you fired the shotgun yet, or is this only happening when you dry fire it? The reason for the hold open is so you can fish around in the action, in case there is a problem like dirt in the action, without cutting off/smashing your finger when the bolt slams home.

No, I haven't fired it yet. I did load the magazine though, and hit the button on the loading gate to chamber the first round. I then thought I could unload it by pulling back on the bolt and releasing it (which would eject the first round and load the next one until I cycled through all the shells, just like a semi-auto pistol or rifle). That is how the gun works when it is firing, so I assumed I could do that by hand. But I'm now being informed that I need to pull the bolt back and hit the button on the loading gate to chamber not only the first shell, but each one in the magazine as well.

I guess I should have simply asked: "How do you unload your shotgun when there is a shell in the chamber and your magazine is full?"

The manual only states that when unloading you should "Open and close the bolt" to cycle through the shells. It doesn't mention that you have to hit the button on the loading gate in order to chamber each shell from the magazine. I just figured something was wrong with my shotgun.

So....how do you unload your Remington 1100? :)

Alright, Shane, try this...

Let's assume that your 1100 is loaded, with 1 in the chamber and 2 in the magazine.

Constantly keeping the barrel pointed in a safe direction, and with the safety "ON", you will:

1. Push the carrier release button to gain access to the feed latch. The feed latch is the mechanism that keeps shells in the magazine. It has a little lip on it that you can hear "click" when you fully seat a shell in the magazine.

2. Depress the feed latch inward against the inside of the receiver. That will allow each shell in the magazine to slide back out of the magazine tube. Empty the magazine.

3. Once the magazine is empty, pull back on the operating handle to open the bolt. The shell in the chamber will eject.

4. Visually inspect the chamber and the magazine to ensure that the shotgun is unloaded.

Remember, always keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction, and keep the safety "ON."
