11-87 "light contour barrel"

Can somebody tell me the reason (advantages or disadvantages) why Remington went with a light contour barrel . I'm looking to buy one in a left hand configuration and wonder if I should look for a used one with the regular contour. Thanks

Weight pure and simple from what I understand of it.

Per remmington the light contour is the minimal safe wall thickness... if you want to back bore, cut and re-install chokes etc. you might be limited or out of luck.

At the same time if you like that 11-87 you could always pop a new / used barrel on it if you ever wanted.

The 11-87 has a steel reciver so I'm guessing they wanted to be somewhat competative with the alloy reciver guns.

I have a Remington 1187LC and i LOVE IT!!! light and utterly dependable with any load you put in it. shoots like a dream. I have since sold my Benelli M2 and i love the Remington and i think it put the M2 to shame.

Not so fast… The design of the light contour barrel is different than the standard 11-87 barrel. It will fit the receiver just fine, but the forend stock will not fit. You will need a forend stock from a standard 11-87 if you switch barrels on a LC.
I purchased a LC when they first came out and waited for months on a LC rifled slug barrel. I was told Remmington was in the process of manufacturing them. It never came (I don’t know if Remmington ever made a LC slug barrel) I ended up purchasing a standard 11-87 rifled slug barrel, but the forend stock would not fit. I had to get a standard 11-87 forend stock to make it work.
