11-87 barrel shortening

Just a simple question that my searching as yet to show a clear concise answer....can a standard hunting model 11-87 (assume 28" barrel) have its barrel cut to 18.25" without any other modifications? As in gas port modified to still cycle the gun? Scattergun modified 11-87's at one time but their part on Wilson doesn't appear to show any of those previous guns. Vang appears to work on them also. Basically I have a source of cheap used hunting grade 11-87's and if I could just ship the barrel to be cut I would obviously avoid the FFL trip.....

For a simple question, how did I get a paragraph??

I do not have direct experinece with doing this. But i have two thoughts to offer.

Cabellas does offer short remington 11-87 barrels. However, they mention that they are not equipped with a compensated gas system, and thus one must only use 2.75 and 3 inch magnum loads.

So i would suspect that your shortening might work with hi power shells. no skeet loads need apply.

THe question is: how cheap are we talking here? If its over $70, its probably worth just buying a used shortened barrel or buying a new one, to get the confidence that would provide.

But if you can get em for really cheap. . . it might be worth a try. I would be interested in the result (and also in what your source is ;) )

I'll fire Remington an email.

I figured of everyone on this board, someone had tried it or one of the gunsmiths here knew.

My source is a large gun dealer back home. Alot of people are buying the newer 3.5" guns as turkey and geese are plentiful here. Hence many old 11-87's are accumulating in his used section so I had an idea if could cut costs on barrel cutting and no FFL it might be worthwhile.

Well here is Remington's short and sweet response:

"Thank you for your patience. We do not offer or recommend altering the barrel."

The police 11-87's work with 18" and 14"barrels so it obviously works in some way....
