11-87 barrel length.

Can the barrel of a Rem 11-87 SP be shortened from 21 to 18in without adversley affecting reliability? Will the gas system need to be modified? I know that it should be possible because I've seen Police model 11-87's with 18in barrels. I'm just wondering if it would be practical. The gun would only have to function with slugs and buck-shot. BTW, I've looked on line for an 18in barrel, but have never been able to locate one.

For a barrel check Vang Comp, I think they might take care of it. Really pricey though (although well worth it). Not sure if SGT does individual custom work anymore, would doubt it. I'm sure most gunsmiths would do a nice job trimming it down and refinishing, and replacing sights.
As you said, there are 11-87's with 18" barrels so it should work. But, if it were mine I really wouldn't want to take any chances when dealing with an auto shotgun. Plus, 21" should give you an extra round in a ext. mag.
Actually I was wondering the same about a Saiga, my next purchase, if I get one with a longer barrel will want to take it down to 18. But not sure if it would still cycle properly.

Comparing the barrel from a longer 11-87 with the 18 inch barrel off mine everything seemed to be in the same place so it would be hard for me to immagine that it matters and remmingotn lists the same size clean out drill for the gas port for all sizes so I don't think it should matter one bit.

I woudl suspect that any remmingotn dealer could order a replacment 18in barrel for you as they are made in several flavors for the police guns.

my buddy just got an 11-87 police with 18" barrel and an extra 26" barrel for hunting no problems with either one. find a used hunting barrel and cut it down
