Hey guys, what do you think?I want to buy a powerful auto (for cheap) to compliment my G19, EG Makarov, and S&W 586 .38 caliber target revolver.I've owned and fired many types of handguns (including a P90 and a CZ75) but don't currently own a big-bore auto. It may be used for defense but mostly just for power plinking :D

I just bought a P-95DC and am very impressed with it. Have heard many good things about the P-97. Concerning the Witness, reviews have been mixed. I don't have much experience with EAA, but I can say that Ruger puts out good stuff at a good price, and if you prefer function over form like I do, the Ruger is your best bet.

Get the P97. Ammo for the .45 is cheaper and easier to find than 10mm. The P97 is strong enough to take hot .45 loads. If you really wanted to rock you could convert the gun to .45 Super or even .40 Super for really high velocities. I've owned both Ruger and Witness pistols. The Ruger won hands down for reliability.

I was interested in the Compact Witness in 10mm until I actually held one. The grip felt good enough, the trigger was nice and light, but those sights were horrid and it would cost as much as the gun to get new ones milled into the slide.

I think factory service is an important factor to consider. I love the feel of the EAA, and the P97 feels as ergonomic as a box of rocks, but if you ever need to send the gun back for some reason, Ruger service is great in my experience. EAA on the other hand has been rated on this board and others as anywhere from mediocre to downright terrible, not an inspiring track record.

You got that right. I love my Witness .45, and bought it after shooting both it and the Ruger P97. It is a dichotomy, that Witness pistols (made by Tanfoglio in Italy) should be distributed here in the U.S. by a company with such a poor customer service reputation. I have said it before in TFL replies that I have written Tanfoglio in Italy for information and received prompt, curteous replies.

To your question, I would shoot both and see what feels better. I would further recommend the .45 over the 10mm.

Good shooting, Mike
