10mm Witness/Full Size/Compact or Glock?

Hey guys,
Who has any experience with these handguns, or the 10mm? I have heard that the 10mm suffers when fired from a shorter barrel(though I know this is true of all chamberings).

I ask as I shot a 10mm witness(full size) the other day and liked it. I didn't find the recoil that much more unmanageable than my Glock 26 when loaded with CorBon's. I have researched the 10mm and find that it seems to be what it promises-a compromise between power and capacity.

Are there any PD's issuing 10mm's, what brand, and if they are satisfied or not????????

Thanks in advance, and I'll let you all know what I decide,Mike

The Kentucky State Police issues the Smith and Wesson 1096 and some other variations in DAO. I keep hearing rumors that they're preparing to change over to a Glock, I do not know what caliber. I've been told that the KSP likes the 10mm because it will punch thru a car door without a lot of difficulty. They've used this setup for quite a while and my friend who is a trooper said he has no complaints other than being shot 4 times with his own guy by the bad guy! He survived! I'm glad he made it thru that, but if I shoot someone 4 times at close range I expect them to D R O P!

the DAO S&W is the 1086 with a 4.25" barrel.

there r a number of smaller departments that issue the 10mm in one form or another. FBI agents initially issued the 1076 (decocker version) can still carry them, and some still do.

i have a Witness Standard (full size) 10mm and it is an excellent gun that is reliable and accurate. great value. the only concern some Witness 10mm owners have is with the recoil spring...it's too light for heavy loads. the Wonderfinish is nice with a greyish nickle finish. it's the same as tenifer apparently.

i also on the Glock 20 and 29. both r fine handguns and mine r great! i plan on getting one of the newer finger groove and railed G20C.

if u get either, u will get a fine 10mm handgun.

Own (and love) a bunch of Witnesses, but no 10mm. Got a Glock M20, instead.

Now, without retaliation (hopefully), I will offer opinion on 10mm M20: after $1000 worth of parts and work I still don't trust it. It WILL NOT handle hot heavy bullet loads in its stock configuration. It, in any configuration, has not been as reliable as other Glocks. It is not as accurate as I prefer, even with a hard-fit Jarvis barrel.
And with stock trigger parts it goes 'doink'! LOL

I will be buying a 10mm Witness, and not just converting one of my frames.

BigMike: I
carry a G-20 on duty, it has never jammed or failed in any way. I have shot many different factory loads thru this weapon without a failure of any kind. It's accuracy is very good and it's recoil properties are equivlent to a 45.

Weshoot2: What were your 1000.00$ worth of parts you replaced in your G-20? I replaced the plastic guide rod with a steel Springco recoil reducer witha wolff 24lb spring, set of Heine staight eight slant pro nite sights, Houge slip on grip. Total cost = 200.00$ [shoots excellent and no failures so far, accuracy is very good] Guess i'd be vindictive too if i put a K into a gun and would'nt shoot or "handel hot loads".

I would recommend a G-20 to anyone looking to buy a pistol in 10mm. 10mm is excellent round and still alive and kicking.

Not vindicitive, just observing.
I've got (and kept) other guns that, for whatever reason, do not function as advertised.

My point: Glock can be a decent reliable shooting appliance. It does not satisfy like any of my other (metal) guns, though.

As for the 10mm cartridge, as far as I'm concerned, it's NEVER going away, but here to stay! (of course, this from a guy who's carrying his 41AE today LOL)

BigMike:

Click on the link below and you can check out the velocities I got out of my Glock 29. I didn't think the velocity bleed was all that bad, but seemed worse for the lighter bullet loads. I have all this data for My Glock 20 also. Let me know and I'll e-mail it (or post it here).

I shoot the heck out of my Glock 20. It's never jammed once, not once - ever and I'm pushing 8k rounds through it in less than 2 years. It's my night stand gun, and the one gun I trust my life, and my family's life to not choke if I need it. I'm thinking and hoping WESHOOT2 got a rare lemon. I know a couple other people who have Glock 20's and all are reliable guns. One had some bad magazines, but that was easily fixed.

I think G20 shooters agree the factory recoil set up stinks unless all you are going to shoot is the "Lite" loads in the 10mm. All I shoot are the full power loads (99% of the time), and have a 22lb spring in mine. I strongly suggest doing this, with a stainless steel guide rod. It's a great set-up, and the strange thing is, when I do shoot .40s in this gun, it still functions fine with the strong springs. Yes, I shoot .40 SW in my Glock 20. It eats .40s like candy.

I once let it go 1000 rounds without cleaning it (all I could bare being a former Marine) and it functioned like it was clean - 100%.

A great gun the Glock 20.

Good luck.

Tom

Is it possible to put $1000 into a glock without messing it up?

IMHO after a few hundred bucks you're just asking for trouble.
