10mm Owners: Accuracy? etc?

Hey guys,

Here's another option I was considering as a giant reptile (gator, pythons, anacondas, etc. See thread [Link to invalid post] ) caliber for the 1911. I opened up my options to include 10mm.

*How many companies produce ammo for it? Do you know what kind of velocity and penetration to expect from these loads?

*With the reputation of the 40S&W, I'm wonder if the accuracy of the 10 is much better. Would it make a good bulls eye caliber? Any handloading experiences?

Thanks for all the help. You're imput will give me the info needed to help me to decide what my next project will shoot.

There is not a lot of commercial ammo available for the 10, except for "premium" desense-type stuff. I haven't been able to shoot my Delta as accurately as my .45, but I haven't shot it enough yet to be sure that it isn't just the different feel of the trigger. The Winchester 175 Silvertip is HOT, fom what I've heard. I have been loading in the cool-to-warm range, and the gun has been perfectly reliable through 500 rounds, even though all of my shooting has been load development. My favorites so far are a 135JHP at 1300fps and a 155JFP at about 1100 using AA7. Both can be driven as much as 200fps faster than that.

10mm is at least as accurate as any other caliber out there. There are lots of people that make ammo in 10mm (alot more than .45 Super or .40 Super). Some examples of higher power factory 10mm loads:

Pro-Load 135gr@1440 FPS, 155gr@1350 FPS, 180gr@1200 FPS

Winchester Super-X 175gr@1290 FPS

Triton Quik-Shok 155gr@1400 FPS

Cor-Bon 135gr@1400 FPS, 150gr@1300 FPS, 165gr@1250 FPS, 180gr JSP@1300 FPS, 200gr Penetrator@1200 FPS

Federal Classic Hi-Shok 155gr@1330 FPS

The 135gr loads and 155gr Quik-Shok would be the lowest penetrating loads, with 155gr JHPs in the middle and the 180-200gr loads providing about as much penetration as you could want.

I, too, have a gator problem and I purchased a S&W 1006 in 10mm. I'm not a big bore guy -- .40S&W and .45ACP are the highest that I've ever gone and right now I have to say that the 10mm (both the gun and the ammo) is more accurate than I am. By the way, I use Winchester Black Talons -- which is the hottest 10mm ammo that I could find. I picked them up dirt cheap from a guy that was gonna give it away / throw it away because he was moving out of state and no longer owned a 10mm.

I found some CCI/Blazer 200 gr. last week and shot it today. A tad more recoil than the 180's I have been shooting, but accurate for my purposes anyway. I shot it in our department's Q course, able to keep the rounds in the 5 ring for all 50. The gun is a 1076, someone said it is the most accurate S&W auto made, I think I heard. It seems flatter than my 4506 and easier to carry.

Equalizer--

I have just purchased a Delta Elite, and have done a little testing. The Winchester Silvertip seems to be the about the best factory load out there. As others have mentioned, it has a nominal velocity with a 175 grain bullet of 1290 fps. In my Delta, it clocked about 1240 fps. and was quite accurate. I was able to shoot 2-1/2 to 3-inch groups at 25 yards standing with a 2-hand hold. Cor-Bon makes some interesting big-critter loads, including a 200-grain FMJ flat point "penetrator" and a 180 grain bonded core soft point.

I think the .45 ACP is the premier bullseye caliber. Properly built pistols in this caliber can shoot 2-inch groups at 50 yards, and the caliber is accurate with mid-range loads around 750-775 fps, as well as full-charge loads around 850 fps and up.

Glad to hear it! I've heard so much negative responses of how the 40SW does on average, that I was starting to wonder if it had something to do w/SD and twist rate or something. Haven't heard enough about the 10mm to know if it is as finickey to find an accurate reload, comparable to 45ACP.

FUD, I know how you feel about the gator problem. I love gators. Respect them too. A gator on the arm threatening to go into a death roll is no fun. The lascerations on the arm weren't nearly as painful as the crushing power. What do you carry in gator country?

What happened? Thought there would be more 10mm fans here........

I have a 10mm, in this case it's a Glock model 20. Best loads i've run across so far are Winchester Silvertips [175 grainers] but after chronographing these loads they fell short of there advertised velocity. [about 100fps short.]

Have not been able to find any Triton or Corbon ammo in my area.

On "Glocktalk" website theres a thread going on in the "10 ring", about a company in Texas thats going to start loading 10mm ammo up to its potential. They have ordered test barrels and will begin tests shortly for 10mm loads that many members there have given thier input on what they would like to see in 10mm ammo.

I am going to upgrade my 20 with a 6 inch hunting barrel from KKM. i have installed Hienie Straight Eight Slant Pro nite sights & Springco recoil reducer already.

10mm is a great round, i wish Para or H&K chambered chambered this caliber in some of thier factory models. Until then i'll shoot my Glock.

Marvelous round, very powerful from the correct launch platform, expensive but worth it, as far as accuracy it is a GUN FUNCTION, not a cartridge issue.

I've got a 200g FMJ-FP/1200fps load (but Glocks will not function correctly with this load).
I've got a 220g LFP/1200fps load; same Glock thing...

Great in a properly prepared 1911.

Castle Bravo- You say your heavier loads like
180 gr. have better penatration and the lighter loads like 135 have a lot less.
Thats way different than everything Ive read.
Most mags Ive read that have done velocity or penatrtion tests favor lighter loads like for example the 125gr.JHP in .357 is known to be much better fro ons stop shots than the 180 gr.
Was their a specific place you read that those heavier loads penatrate better.
Im asking because Ive based my self-defense loads on the mags Ive read and mostly go with things like 165 gr. Hydrashocks and 185 gr gold speer for my .45.
Will be buying a 10mm soon especially if I find that the barrels are interchangable on the g20 and 21.

Ruger45, I'll jump in on this one if you don't mind. All else being equal, a heavier bullet will almost always out penetrate a lighter one. This is not to say that it is better for defense, just that it penetrates deeper. There are many factors that will determine how much penetration you feel comfortable with and whether your belief system falls in line with the IWBA or popular gun rag literature. In regard to the 10mm, the 180 to 200 grain solid loads are designed for hunting. The 180gr hollow point would be a good LE load, and the lighter stuff good for self defense where you don't want to take the chance of overpenetration. The 175gr silvertip is pretty hard to beat in 10mm for almost any application.

I recently purchased a Glock 20 for use against cougars & other threatening creatures that I might run across when hiking. I've read that Hornady makes an excellent, very powerful hunting load in 10mm: it might be what you need against those gators.

I have a glock 29, which is very accurate and the recoil is managable. Federal's 158 grain hydrashock is a hard hitting round, and WIn st' are supposed to be also. Federal's 180 gr round is good for practice, as well as the cheaper UMC.
