10mm Magnum & 10mm Auto Rim in a S&W 610 revolver?

I'm interested in "maximizing" the 10mm caliber (not cartridge) in a S&W 610 revolver. Given the inherent strength of the N-frame and the relatively thick chamber walls of the 610's cylinder, I would like to stretch the ballistic performance of the 10mm caliber (not cartridge) into true magnum territory, while mantaining the ability to still shoot standard 10mm auto, and even .40 S&W cartridges, using moon-clips.

In order to determine maximum cartridge overall length (AOL); What is the length of a S&W 610 cylinder?

Starline makes 1.25" Magnum 10mm brass, as opposed to the normal 0.992" 10mm auto case. I would like to have the 610's cylinder re-chambered to hold this longer case. Has this ever been done before?

Also, would it be possible to make 10mm "Rim" cartridges by cutting off .30-30 Winchester brass and then fire-forming? (readily available, and the dimensions are very close.) This would eliminate the need for moon-clips.

Thanx, Dave.

Well the 10mm Auto is basically 10x25mm and the .41 Magnum is basically 10.41x33mm so it sounds like what you're trying to do already exists.

Zundfolge,

Thanx for the reply, but:
Ya can't fire .40 S&W and 10mm auto cartridges (of which I have a HUGE supply) out of a .41 Magnum revolver. That's why I want to maximize to 10mm(.40) caliber.

Dave.

you got to love the 40

the brass is so cheap.in the 610 the 40 is not short and weak.i get 1200 fps with a 180 rainier it will be more with an xtp/hp but i have not clocked it yet, thanks, keith

I have one of my 610 revolvers out at a gunsmiths to have the cylinder reamed for 10mm magnum. If I ever get it back  I will post how it works with all ammo types.

Been there ....

I've had it done, & know another guy here in IA that had it done. The 10mm Rim I made was out of .41 Mag brass trimmed to 10mm Mag length. It could likewise be trimmed to 10 or .40 lenght. (10mm Mag Rim, 10mm Rim, .40S&W Rim?)

Accurate Arms will give you data for the 10mm Mag. Starline brass is very good stuff.

You may find (as I did) that the jump to 10mm Mag from 10mm Norma is less rewarding than anticipated. I'm glad I did it, as it turned out not to affect accuracy in my 5" 610 and I like to tinker.

For the modest gain in FPS & the fact that it ain't gonna kill a deer any deader than a long loaded 10mm, and that it doesn't in my opinion let you prudently hunt anything bigger than deer, I think it's interesting but not that impressive.

Ain't sure I'd do it again knowing what I know now given the risk of mucking up a phenomnal shooter (the only type deserving of this type of treatment) cost & need to use FMCs for 10mm now.

I have however built up a 10mm Mag duplex load from 2 Nosler 135 grain pills back to back (hind pill is compressed in a case gauge) @ 1150fps that is an interesting load to shoot & helps IDPA scores. (Stold the idea from McNett's 10mm duplex load.)

I don't recall the cylinder lenght, but I know it's shorter than a 686 cylinder, and that even 220 gr. lead 10mm Mag loads don't reach the end (but 235 gr spitzer sure do!)

YMMV

X

Note that you can also load 10mm Auto to longer-than-normal OAL to fit more powder in the case IF you are using a S&W 610 revolver.

Use starline brass, magnum primers and lots of AA #9 for a big BOOM. Usual safety disclaimers for reloading still apply, of course.
