Hey guys i want to get me a 10mm Glock 20. Please tell me about the 10mm. It seems like a great round on paper. I think i read it was invisioned as the ultimate man stopper,if there is such a thing. A big, relitively heavy fast bullet,OUCH!
Anyway i am cunfused at the thought of all of this. Some say that the ammo is hard to get but every gun shop i have ever been in has had it on the shelf. What is the recoil like on a Glock 20? I am use to 45acp in a 1911 gun. I recently bought a Ruger 44 mag,so iam not recoil sensitive. Also any actual shooting with the 10mm? I think Kentucky state police use the 10mm,no? I have heard that 175 gr Winchester Silvertips are a true 10mm load. Any experiance with this load? How loud is the ten? If you fired one in a house would you go deaf? This would be primarily a house gun, sometimes car gun. Thanks, 45automan

It's a very fun pistol to shoot. The recoil isn't significantly more than a .40. I have no trouble with it at all. The muzzle blast is huge, though, and you will go very deaf if you fire it indoors. The pistol is much smaller than you'd think; I can conceal it easily. I wouldn't use it as a carry gun though, but that's just because I prefer a Sig 9mm, not for any real reason. I've heard very good things about 10mm and never have trouble getting ammo.

Be warned, once you shoot the G-20 you will never be satisfied with a normal pistol again.

As far as righteous 10mm ammo goes; anything by CorBon or ProLoad, Winchester's Silvertip, Triton's QuikShok, Black Hills, Federal's 155gr HiShok, and Hornady's XTP line are all fully juiced. Rule of thumb is if it's 180gr 10mm and from a major mfr, or says "tactical", then it's FBI-style 10mm 'lite'.

I sent this email to a friend of mine several days ago. It should give you some indication as to the kind of enthusiasm the 10mm inspires.

"The firepower, penetration, and hard-hitting potential of a 10mm MP5 is greater than a .45 ACP Thompson submachine gun. At any range, the projectile fired from a 10mm MP5 has nearly twice the energy of a comparable 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP cartridge. "
I took this statment from the Heckler & Koch webpage. One of the most objective I can find now-a-days about the 10MM cartridge(my favorite). How the American shooting public was duped into believing "the 10MM is not a excellent cartridge" is beyond me. It has better ballistics than the 357 magnum. In fact, in the late 80s (early 90s) the 10MM was noted as demonstrating low end 41 magnum ballistics.

Of course we could not have began to experiment on the 10MM with a worst choice of cartridges, the NORMA 200 grain Truncated medal jacket. I was in Germany when the Delta Elite (that's another story) came out and bought the first one that hit our Rod & Gun Club. It didn't take long before the Norma ammo had left a bad taste in most shooters mouths. Not that the bullet weight was totally wrong but apparently little research went into the development of the NORMA 10MM 200 grain ammo. Recoil was much too excessive and everone was lead to believe that this was the nature of the 10MM ( I dissagree with that premise).

To make matters worst, COLT put a "PLASTIC" recoil spring guide in the "DELTA ELITE" (what were they thinking?) which the NORMA ammo beat to death at about 100 rounds. This made some people think the gun was no good, I just thought it was flawed. I took it to a German Gunsmith and had him mill a duplicate recoil spring guide out of 416 hardened steel (I kept the 2 spring configuration), tighten the slide/frame fit on a diamond press, and adjust the trigger pull to 4 lbs. The NORMA ammo was so expensive, I was forced to take up reloading. I used SPEER 190 grain truncated medal jacket bullets with 6.7 grains of Herc "UNIQUIE" gunpowder. What a sweet combination!! Try it sometimes if you're fortunate enough to still own a 10MM handgun.
Now I know what you're going to say, "Charles, you just reinvented the 45 cartridge..." WRONG ANSWER! The nature of the 10MM is much different from the 45. The report is sweeter and much more toleratble, the recoil is more controllabe, and l consistantly experienced greater accuracy with much less effort( that is, concentrating on stance, sight alignment, breathing, trigger pull to get off a perfect shot every time).

Today, my "DELTA ELITE" has been modified to perfection (for me). The list includes: WILSON's full length recoil spring guide w/ 2 spring configuration and shock buff, flat mainspring housing, combat hammer, Walnut presentation grips; KING's extended slide safety, extended slide stop and model 104 (I believe) grip safety; original barrel (crowned), trigger( adjusted to 4 lbs and sights (never touched). I would "checker" the front strap but the gun feels perfect in my hand as it is. I can put a smiley face under the 10 on a pistol target at 25 yards any day. Although I seldom shoot this weapon. It has become more of a trophy that flies in the face of conventional wisdom to me than an everyday carry gun (I possess a North Carolina "Concealed Carry Permit" ).

Although I do carry it when I'm feeling real special. On those occasions it is accompanied by only the best accessories, i.e. a "Galco Concealable" holster cut for a "Colt Officer's Model" (I like the look of that inch or so of steel sticking out the bottom of the holster); Wilson 9 rd 10MM magazines stuffed with COR@BON 150 grain 10MM JHP(1250 fps with a muzzle energy of around 620 ft/lbs). About the COR@BON 150 grain 10MM JHP ammo. I believe this is some of the most effective conventional ammunition available to the shooting public.

If Heckler & Koch would fit the "USP COMPACT .45" platform for the 10MM cartridge, I would be in shooter's heaven!! The Glock 29 just doesn't do it for me. I believe it would revive interest in the 10MM and do a lot to increase sales of gunbook magazines *_*

I say go for it! I would have one myself, but the grip seems a little thick for me.

Whenever I see threads on "What handgun would you take if...", the most common response is usually (Beretta 93's, Glock 18's, SP89's and Uzi Pistols aside) either a 1911 or a Glock 20.

Lots of firepower. From what I hear, the only complaint about the 10mm is that some say it's too powerful. And 15+1 rounds of a bullet that might be too powerful sounds just right to me!

Finally, while 10mm is available, it's not nearly as common as 9, .40 or .45, so you may want to stock up.

Make sure you look at the new fg/r frame- I had an original M20 when they first came out, & I find the new style much more comfortable to grip. If you can take the recoil of a .45 1911 & a .44 Mag you will have no problem with the M20.

I was going to say that the 10mm is a pretty violent round in the hands, but if you are use to shooting .45's and 44mags, then you won't mind it at all.

Yep, it's a man stopper alright. It's numbers on paper are impressive.

Let me put it this way, don't stand on the other side of the barrel of a 10mm.

The recoil from a Glock 20 is not much. The round is excellent. Capacity is excellent. It will be my next pistol purchase. Until then i'll have to borrow a friend of mine's.

10mmMan,
I've handled one or two of these, and the grip seems too thick to me as well (actually, the whole gun seems too thick), but how can I tell if I'm handling a new or an old one? Is there some obvious change that will tell me I have the new style?

I'm trying to like the Glock 20, but it is an uphill battle for me. I also wish HK would make a USP in 10mm, or or EAA a Whitness Polymer, or someone else a light-weight, compact 10mm. But so far, the Glocks the only game in town if you want a small, light pistol in this caliber (which I do).

Doug,

If it has finger groves & a "rail" forward of the trigger guard, you have the new frame. It's as small as your going to get for 16 rds of 10mm. It may take some getting use to, but the wider grip cuts down on percieved recoil by spreading it out over a larger area. Once you are use to it, you will find it an easey gun to shoot fast & well. I have medium hands at the most, & have done quite well in Pin shoots & "practicle" comp. with mine. Some people like the M29 with a finger rest better- the trigger may be a bit shorter. I have both, & the 29 does feel quite good- it's the one I take when I have to have max. power in a min. packaege.

Why not 45 Super. Same bullet weight but faster than 10mm 185 @1300fps. Don't own either of them but just a thought. I dont know much about either but you could also shoot the acp in the super, a little more versatile? I know this is not the question originally posted but I heard of all the merit the 10 gets on speed so I thought I would throw this in there.

ACP works fine for me, but if that ain't enough my 45 Colt with 300gr xtp at 1300 will be. :)

I have a glock 20 and love it. They no longer list the extended barrel but they still had a few in stock and I have one on mine.
I love the gun. Little hard to do a quick second shot but that doesn't worry me much.
I did have a problem though with the +2 extensions that the previous owner had on the hi-caps. I think those extensions are only for the FML mags (scarce) so I had to get new springs/floor plates for the mags.

It's a great platform for the 10mm!

The 45 super is a fine round, But it costs too much to convert a glock. A 1911 is very cheap to do. I would stick to the 10mm in the glock. As far as a man stoper 45 is going to stop them dead if you hit them center of mass. The 10mm for hunting is a different story. I still would rather have my 45super for all around use. Just my humble thoughts.

Wait a minute... Don't get a 10mm because it's a 'hobby' round, get a .45 Super instead?

What's Winchester's best load in .45 Super? Federal's? PMC's? How about Black Hills or ProLoad? Maybe Triton or CorBon? Is anyone working on load development outside of some dude's garage in Texas?

Then there's this, straight from the horse's mouth:
quote:
. The shooter should expect such malfunctions as: (1) failing to feed ammunition properly; (2) frequent jams; (3) pierced primers; and (4) possible failures in the structural design of the firearm. This list is not exhaustive, and other problems and dangers can and will occur
when firing .45 super in "unconverted" firearms, so therefore:
quote:
Because firearms manufactured for the 45 ACP only and are not manufactured for the 45 Super® and its increased pressure and velocities, Texas Ammunition Company advises all customers not to use 45 Super® ammunition in any firearm that is not specifically manufactured or converted for the 45 Super® cartridge.
Makes me want to load my gun right on up, and put my lawyer on speed-dial...

In one breath the 10mm is "too uncontrollable and overpenatrative" for defense work (and I agree that the hottest 180gr & 200gr loads from a G29 can be a liability when the situation calls for rapid, precision shooting), yet in a graceful pretzel-like twist, its detractors then recommend a round with even more recoil and penetration...

Now, 10mm is too scarce in your local gun shop or Mart-mart? How about that awesome Texas Ammo .45 Super dealer network, with dealers scattered from one side of Kerrville, TX to the other!

Look, guys, the .45 ACP is a fine cartridge as is, a world-class manstopper; especially in +P form, but someone obviously got a burr under their saddle about the M.E. differential between 'old reliable' and the "new kids" and is attempting to violate an ancient racing saying: "You can't make a racehorse out of a pig; no matter how hard you try, all you wind up with is a fast pig."

Used to have a S&W 1076 and a Delta Elite in 10mm...loved the 10mm. Both put some awesome holes in targets. It's a flat shooter, but for me I just couldn't get that barrel down fast enough for follow up shots.

Then one day when I was checking out my house...we used to get a bunch of attempted break-ins(11 in one year), so I check the house out "armed." When I reached the last room, I depressed the decocker on the S &W and blew a hole in my door frame, good thing I had the gun in a low ready and loaded with Hydra-shoks, 'cause it went through the frame, the stud and the bottom plate but flattened itself with no ricochet on the slab. 2 weeks later, I get a call from my friend at the nearby gunstore saying there was a S & W recall on the 1076's. When I got it back I made a decent trade with friends on the 2-10mm's...Wished I kept them, though.
