AndABeer:
Glad to see you're joining other 10mm Smith fans.
Yes, "fans," because once people put their S&W-hating aside, they find the 10XX series pistols to be perhaps the best autoloaders Smith ever produced. Once in a rare while you'll hear from someone who got a lemon in the 10XX series, but, hey, every manufacturer let's one out the factory door. Actually, they've been relatively problem-free.
The FBI-recall on their 1076s was generated by problems inherent in the way the Bureau wanted their triggers set up. Long story. But once fixed, the agents who wanted them back (& there were a lot of them) got them, and some still have them (despite the "offical" transition for new agents to the .40 S&W G-22/23). This, in my opinion, is where the claim originated that the 1076's frame-mounted decocker is "fragile." All I can tell you is I've had mine a
long time now, and the decocker's still going strong. Yours is, I assume, one of the commercially-issued guns. If it's an LE trade-in, the mag-disconnect is disabled and the slide bears the warning, "gun will fire with mag removed" or like language.
For grips, S&W still has the curved or straight grips for the 10mms, including the one cut to accomodate the decocker. I believe Brownells sells these as well. (Sorry, don't have the part # handy). However, a call to either can get you what you need. It's important that the grip fit your hand comfortably. I've seen the Hogue Handall (that slip-on rubber thingy) with the finger-grooves. It definitely gives you more to grip without overly increasing width. This, IMO, is a better choice than the Hogue wood grips, which are not checkered but smooth (at least when I inquired) and, on recoil, are sure to slip around in your hand.
Smith should still have the white followers & mag base pads if you need replacements for your mags or just want to pick up a few spares.
Don't forget to get a catalog from Wolff's. They stock XP mag springs for the Smith 10mms as well as various power recoil springs (mine's got a 20lb in it). The heavier ones are nice if you shoot a lot of the hotter factory loads or intend to reload up to the nuclear level.
My dealer friend, knowing that I'm a 10mm fan (he's one too), has recently been tempting me by waving an SOG Dealer flyer under my nose. SOG's got a bunch of "VG condition" Smith 1066s listed at $359.95 (his price). My better half's been asking what "else" I might want for X-mas.
Have fun.
