1076 owners?

Picked up a 1076 today. Not a fan of S&W autos but I am a huge fan of 10mm and it was a decent price for NIB. Went straight to the range and put 100 rounds of CCI Blazer though it. No jams, seems to shoot a bit low but nice groups. Single action trigger is pretty crisp and double action is smooth and reasonably light. Still hate the damn mag safety.

I think the grip might grow on me but as a general rule in life I don't care for things growing on me so does anyone know of a source for replacement grips that account for the decocker? Has anyone whittled on a Hogue wood set or is there enough meat in that region of the left panel to whittle?

Anyone fired true 10 loads through theirs yet. The Blazer was quite mild.

I have a 1006, the longer version of yours. I love it. It handles full power 10mm loads like a pussycat and is very accurate. 100% reliable so far. Hogue makes good replacement grips in wood or rubber, but I like the original grips. S&W 10mm's rock!!:D

Unfortunately the standard 1000 series grips or replacements will not work because of the frame mounted decocker. If the 1076 had the curved backstrap contour like the 1006, I'd probably leave everything except the sights alone. Time to call S&W and see if they have anysuggestions I guess.

I really liked the one I had. Sold it because the round was tough to find. Shoulda discovered reloading sooner!

You might call Hogue or Ajax Custom Grips and inquire about having a set of stocks made for you. That is, if they don't make them already.

Love that 1076

Love that 1076 and the 10mm rounds that I put through it. Used full loads, and the gun treated it like it was a soft 40. Fast round, I was a little slow on the muzzle lift though, but with some practice i could have made it a "keeper."
Had trouble with it's decocker....had a AD/ND, had trouble accepting it even though I had it fixxed.
Other than that...a good shooter.

If you're not already, focus on your middle and next to the last fingers of the grip hand as the primary pressure points and avoid the tendency to use the pinky which will pull your shots down and to the left due to the high bore axis of the S&W Auto and make sure your weight is on the ball of your feet and not your heels.

I used to have a 1076. It was awsome. I traded it for a Walther P-99 that is no longer in my collection. The 1076 would take my 180 gr GSHP's at 1300 fps all day long. It was an amazing gun, I never should have traded it. PMC's 170 gr JHP load is a touch snappier than the 200 gr Blazer BTW. I usually carried 155 gr Fed JHP or 175 gr Slivertips FWIW. -Coug

Talked with Hogue and they said I am SOL except for the Handall. Suppose I can try it but I really think they look cheesy and wanted a fuller backstrap as opposed to fingergrooves. Thanks for all the info.

Glad to see you're joining other 10mm Smith fans.

Yes, "fans," because once people put their S&W-hating aside, they find the 10XX series pistols to be perhaps the best autoloaders Smith ever produced. Once in a rare while you'll hear from someone who got a lemon in the 10XX series, but, hey, every manufacturer let's one out the factory door. Actually, they've been relatively problem-free.

The FBI-recall on their 1076s was generated by problems inherent in the way the Bureau wanted their triggers set up. Long story. But once fixed, the agents who wanted them back (& there were a lot of them) got them, and some still have them (despite the "offical" transition for new agents to the .40 S&W G-22/23). This, in my opinion, is where the claim originated that the 1076's frame-mounted decocker is "fragile." All I can tell you is I've had mine a long time now, and the decocker's still going strong. Yours is, I assume, one of the commercially-issued guns. If it's an LE trade-in, the mag-disconnect is disabled and the slide bears the warning, "gun will fire with mag removed" or like language.

For grips, S&W still has the curved or straight grips for the 10mms, including the one cut to accomodate the decocker. I believe Brownells sells these as well. (Sorry, don't have the part # handy). However, a call to either can get you what you need. It's important that the grip fit your hand comfortably. I've seen the Hogue Handall (that slip-on rubber thingy) with the finger-grooves. It definitely gives you more to grip without overly increasing width. This, IMO, is a better choice than the Hogue wood grips, which are not checkered but smooth (at least when I inquired) and, on recoil, are sure to slip around in your hand.

Smith should still have the white followers & mag base pads if you need replacements for your mags or just want to pick up a few spares.

Don't forget to get a catalog from Wolff's. They stock XP mag springs for the Smith 10mms as well as various power recoil springs (mine's got a 20lb in it). The heavier ones are nice if you shoot a lot of the hotter factory loads or intend to reload up to the nuclear level.

My dealer friend, knowing that I'm a 10mm fan (he's one too), has recently been tempting me by waving an SOG Dealer flyer under my nose. SOG's got a bunch of "VG condition" Smith 1066s listed at $359.95 (his price). My better half's been asking what "else" I might want for X-mas. :D Have fun.

Used to have a 1026, which is a 1006 with a decocker. Loved it. Too big for carry though, so I sold it and bought a 4003TSW. Love IT too.
