1076 for deer hunting?

I have been thinking about a 10 mm auto for a deer hunting sidearm. I do not specifically hunt deer with a sidearm, but wear one for when a deer appears unexpectedly and you cannot get a rifle around without being seen. I have used a .45 ACP in the past once and had good luck but I really want something larger. The shots will not be longer than 30 yards. Would a Smith and Wesson 1076 provide enough accuracy and power to do the job or should I stick with the 1006 design. It seems that 1076's can be had at good prices right now and I like Smith automatics (me and aobut 3 other people are all, though, as far as I can tell.)

Actually, there're a lot more Smith-likers around here than that, but we know how to keep a good thing to ourselves. :)

As to using a 1076 on deer, remember that the barrel length is 4.25", so there's some drop-off in the "box-flap" velocity of most 10mm loads, as these are typically chrono-ed thru 5 inch factory "test barrels." The 1006 sported a 5" barrel.

Absent any minimum barrel-length/caliber requirements applicable to hunting game with an autoloader in your State, use the most powerful 10mm "hunting"-type ammo you can obtain to assure a quick, clean kill. CorBon's 180gn JSPs are a good place to start.

Your best available deer hunting 10mm gun is a Glock 20 with a 6 inch KKM hunting barrel.

And you can carry 16 rounds on board with hi caps.

The topic is hunting with 10 MM, not trip'in the trigger and shooting sideways.

The S&W 1076 is adequate. Just make sure that there are no legal limitations in your state in regards to minimum power, barrel length and caliber.

Stick to muzzleloader or even better yet bow ranges. You will do just fine. I have killed deer with my S&W 4006 on several occasions with no problem.
