105 GR 9mm Federal Guard Dog Load Data

I just picked up some of these bullets from American Reloading? They are a "patented FMJ-like construction" flat nosed bullet. I have been searching high and low for load data for a 105 GR bullet, no luck. Powder charge and OAL recommendations would be appreciated. I have several powders on hand, Titegroup, Bullseye, W231, HP 38, No. 7 and BE 86.

The Federal data on their loaded ammo gives a muzzle Velocity of 1230 ft/sec.

The 100 grain data on Hodgdon's site will do nicely. Five grains won't matter. Little fellows are really moving. Start loads of HS-6 run 1270 FPS. Most are a bit under 1200 or a bit over. 4" barrel.

The Guard Dog bullets are especially long for their weight because of the polymer plug in the nose, so you can't used load data for lead bullets of the same weight.

See the data at the hodgdon website and note the difference in load data between the 100 grain Speer fmj (lead) and the 100 grain SFIRE (Sinterfire frangible) bullet. The frangible bullet is also extra long for it's weight because it is less dense than lead. The charges for the Sinterfire bullet are much lower than for the lead Speer bullet.

These long for their weight bullets (Guard Dog, Sinterfire) take up more space in the case, so the charge weight has to be reduced to keep pressures low.

You'll have to reduce the charge weight considerably for the Guard Dog bullets to avoid an excess pressure situation that could result in a kaboom.

Use the Sinterfire data as a guide. Start with the starting charge and work your way up slowly and watch for pressure signs.

Thanks for the input, fellas. I usually start at the low end and work up. I look for accurate, but safe loads. I will test 10 cartridges each of several loads adding 0.2 GR and verify accuracy at 25 yds.

I haven't loaded any yet. I am recovering from a Total Knee a Replacement surgery and can't stand at the bench long enough to load yet. Probably a couple more weeks of recovery needed before I can do that.

HS-6 First Loads

I also have found zero info for loading 9mm Guard Dog, but this thread helped me get started and so I will post what I found. Yes, they are long for weight, which means comparing loads for SFire and 147 gr HP are very important for getting a starting charge.

The Guard Dog bullets are the same size as Winchester 147 gr HP which are 1.115 OAL. Hogdon lists a max for 147 gr with HS6 at 5.0 gr 1.1 OAL.

I tried HS6 with CCI 500 at 1.115 OAL and charge weights of 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.9, 5.0, 5.1, 5.2. All the 4's did not cycle a Glock 17. 5.1 and 5.2 did a better job cycling. The primers of the 5.1 and 5.2 loads did show some flattening.

I will try next some 5.5 gr loads at 1.13, 1.14 and 1.15 and post results here.

9mm 105 gr Guard Dog
9mm brass at .750"
OAL 1.13
HS6 5.5 gr
CCI 500 primer

Functioned flawlessly in 16" AR9 and gave same accuracy as factory loads. Primer pressure signs were identical to factory loads. Factory loads were 115gr Tula, PPU and Federal. Wal-mart ammo. Probably going to try 5.3 gr at 1.13 for pistol.

More 9mm Guard Dog Data

Some more loads that did cycle a Glock 17 with zero issues.

All brass is 0.750 inches with CCI 500 primers

HS6 5.5 gr w/ OAL 1.13

No.5 5.6 & 5.8 gr w/ OAL 1.15

The No.5 5.8gr load is a +P load from Accurate, 5.6gr is regular. The 5.6gr was great for recoil and the 5.8 very snappy, but still easily manageable.

Accuracy for these was great and show no signs of over pressure.

Loads that did not cycle a Glock 17.

SR4756 4.0 & 4.6 gr w/ OAL 1.15
Longshot 4.0 & 4.2 gr w/ OAL 1.15
Herco 3.6 & 4.0 gr w/ OAL 1.15

HS6 with 5.5 grains of powder seems to be a great winner thus far. Accurate No.5 is another winner.

Hope this helps some people.

I was going to load some of these today, but I broke my decapping pin when loading some 124 gr JHP and don't have a spare. Stopping at Dillon on Monday. Too bag as I going to my cabin next weekend which always includes a nice outdoor range day, maybe two.

They are awesome. I had to get some too. Seat them a little deeper to keep magazine malfunction at bay.

I use 4.0 grains of Clay Dot and they're practically one hole at 7 yards.*

My pet load for regular 115 FMJ is 3.6 gn Clay Dot, I love the snot out of that powder.

*(Cycled a Taurus PT111, G43, PX4C, LC9, G19, and a Taurus PT92.)

I was just on RMR website ordering more projectiles and saw the Guard Dog bullet. Bought too much other stuff to try them out.

I too love the Alliant ClayDot powder.
