100K limit, I don't get it.

Why do you guys close threads after so many K? I mean, you wanna restrict bandwidth, but most forums deal with that problem by allowing threads to be multi-page. What's the deal with this? To me this makes no sense. Enlighten me.

Unlike most UBB forums, we actually give a swut about our users.

Most people, like it or not, still have to deal with crappy phone lines and slow-as-molasses connections. When I'm at home, a 100K page takes upwards of 5 minutes to load.

As to why we don't use UBB's pagination function, UBB is a pig. Linking multiple pages makes it even worse as the software has to keep track of where you are in relation to the entire thread.

HTH.

I don't know if it's out yet, but you guys should look into the new version of UBB, called OpenTopic. It is currently in use over at Ars Technica.

Coinneach, I can't find "swut" on the acronym page. :D

UBB is UBB is UBB...
Deleting or adding some features doesnt replace the base engine. UBB is a great engine - but when you grow large as TFL has and Blade Forums has... Its hoggish resource usage becomes a MAJOR problem.
UBB isnt build to handle the traffic and volumes that we deal with.

TFL will migrate to another software in the future - and it will NOT be UBB.

George Hill,

Infopop's OpenTopic UBB does not use the same engine, it is entirely based around SQL.

Two points -

1. OpenTopic is remotely hosted - and IMHO - ain't that great. Whether it's built around SQL or not (which IIRC, it isn't), they still have control over your data, and can pull the plug on you at any time.

2. OpenTopic $1000 per month for the Enterprise version
Check out the bottom of this page - http://www.infopop.com/services_ot/services_ot.html

That's a high price to pay.

Like TFL, I too am unhappy with UBB and am at the threshold where I'm trying to decide whether to switch, or to stay. The primary obstacle at this point is the fact that the other, compareable products that are out there aren't any better, or don't have a decent track record.

My own take on closing threads is why bother ? I can see how big the thread is from the number of posts, and if I cared about bandwidth I would just skip the long threads with subjects I was not interested in.

Why dumb us all down to the slowest users ?

I realize OpenTopic is remotely hosted, but as far as I have heard its still technically in testing. I believe after debugging is totally complete it will be allowed on private servers.

I am certain it is SQL based though. I talked a lot with the Infopop and Ars Technica guys about it when it came out.

I'm going to have to disagree with you.

I've been following the OT discussions almost daily - the primary complaint that many of us power users have is that InfoPop is adamant that it will *not* be available as a locally hosted app - instead the product will only be offered as remotely-hosted - something that has pissed off many of us to no end.

Publically, the Infopop staff have said on multiple occasions that there will be no leeway with this - they don't want to deal with supporting many different OS'es with this product, and instead want to be able to instantly apply patches, etc, by just upgrading the "host" script on their servers.

Whether it's SQL or not doesn't matter - we can't get it, period. Their game is to become an ASP instead of a software vendor.

Needless to say, I, like many many others, am more than a bit pissed off because of this, and many users feel more than a bit betrayed since OT is suppossed to contain many of the features that we've been asking for with UBB since day one.

This, in part, is some of the reason that there are so many people looking for an alternative script.

If InfoPop is going to put out a better script than UBB - that's great. Everytime I've called them, they have not said anything about what needs to be done - and we haven't even seen a bug fix with the product since the beginning of April. I'm hoping there is going to be a major release sometime soon, but I'm past holding my breath.

Frankly, I don't care if it is still in testing or not - we aren't in the position to pay $1000 per month for OpenTopic; there is no "local install" option available; and we're not hearing squat from the UBB staff. Not a recipe for happy customers.
