100 yrs of the .45

Today on 29 Mar 1911, the U.S. Army adopted the Colt .45 Auto as its official sidearm. I just want to take a few moments to reflect on what John Moses Browning's great design has meant to solider's and civilians alike. Think
about it's service in WW1 and 2, Korea, Vietnam, not to mention all the 'little"
events along the way. Serving with Law enforcement and along with John Q. Public on the civilian side, to protect life and property.

Here is a simply designed pistol that has survived it's test in combat longer
than any other military sidearm, and most rifles. I think back years ago when
the US went to a "wonder" nine pistol, I thought why mess with something that hasn’t failed it's mission.

Today the "1911" lives on in the US arsenal, serving with the best Special
Operators on the planet, along with a host of other nations Special Mission
Units. It is produced by a number of makers who sole product is the 1911. As
the saying goes...."Man... what a gun"
So to the .45 I say THANKS and Happy Birthday
now go and give your .45 the hug it deserves

+1 we all should bow our heads to John Moses Browning's in respect, not only for the 1911, but the many other designs he made, many of which are still in use and working off his original designs.

I was starting to wonder if no one would start a birthday thread for the 1911. So kudos to you, SFAL, for getting the ball rolling. I don't have an early one, so I share my WWII Remington Rand:

Shameless Plug: Buy a 1911 birthday T-shirt!

I made the design (which is a bit wordy for some) last year and they've selling pretty well this year. Zazzle is a great place for anybody who wants to design their own shirts. I've made a bunch of milsurp-focused shirts, and I would love to see other people's efforts.

Happy Birthday 1911! God and JMB are proud of you! :D

The first center fire handgun I bought was a 1911. That one is long gone but I have acquired a few others along the way, as well as a few HP's. I think of John Browning as a genius and well ahead of his time. He designed some of the best guns around.

+1. One of a few men in world history that I most greatly admire.

My baby, a 1911, is 97 years old this year. She has served in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War. Her last offical act was at a change of command ceromony in Pine Bluff, AR in 1994.

She served as my carry weapon for most of my Law Enforcement career in AR.

Thank you JB.

I carried many 1911's during my service with the Army, for 10 years while a AeroScout on Kiowas we sometimes were limited to .38 Colts or S&W. but for most of that time I was allowed to choose my side arm and I chose the 1911. I finally found a nice one this year that I could afford and now it's my daily carry weapon, hard to beat 230 gr. of get er done!

I went out and swapped for a new Colt Lightweight Government to celebrate. I have to be careful though, my wife tried it out and I'm starting to get a bit worried...

I cherish my 1917 version. JMB is worthy of the appellation of 'God's Armorer'. Let us also not forget the mighty Ma Deuce, one of the Master's other superlative designs which still serve our military well.

I havent been on for a bit... but I'm glad to see SFAL Started a Centenial thread for the 1911.

I took out my Dan Wesson Valor and shot it at the range on March 29th.

I shot 100 rounds for 100 years.

:)

PS; this just in....."It's the year 2111 and a young trooper's blast gun fails him...he transitions to his secondary...his brand new 2111 model 1911, .45 and gives the bad guy the good news"

I grew up shooting guns, but have never owned or shot many handguns. I'm proud to say that I bought my first two handguns this year, one being a 1911. It is one hell of a gun.
