10 gauge Questions

What kinds of ammo are available for 10 gauge? I'm assuming that not nearly as many as are available for 12 or even 20, due to the limited variety of 10-ga shotguns out there, but I"m curious.

Is buckshot available? Is there a place on the 'net where you can order it? What about slugs?

What are the standard chamber lengths for 10 gauge?

Has anybody here owned or fired the Browning Gold 10-ga semiauto? How does it perform? How's the recoil?

By the way, just out of curiosity, is there any thing you can legally hunt with buckshot?

Yes, there is buckshot, BB, etc. for 10 gauge.
To see what is available, you can go here, enter, and go directly to the online ordering to check what's available

THEN compare with other resellers and especially ask your local independent sporting goods shop what they can do for several boxes at time. I found mine shop to be close enough to warrant keeping the business in town.
For particulars, check the manufacturers pages

but be very patient to allow Winchester a couple minutes to load (it may seem your computer is frozen up - be patient)

I handled a synthetic Browning 10 GA yesterday in my local gun store - $980. Felt nice and wasn't as heavy as a Remington SP-10. The SP-10 is an old Ithaca design if my info is correct. I personally would prefer the Browning especially since they both are the same price roughly.

10 GA I see in this same store comes in everything with obviously more selection around turkey and geese seasons and it is all 3 1/2".

If you study manuals closely 10 GA is often slightly faster than 12 GA 3 1/2" but the 3 1/2" is where all of the development work is aimed at for most ammo manufacturers compared to the 10.

Buckshot is not legal for hunting here, except for one county in the southern tip of the Eastern Shore. Further South, lots of states allow buck, oft used with dogs or people driving the deer.

10 ga ammo is more special purpose stuff, Most 10 ga usage is waterfowl and turkey oriented. Some slugs and buck are sold, but the selection is scant compared to 12, 16 or 20 gauge.

And, the only 10ga I've fired extensively was an Ithaca SP 10, which weighed in at nearly 11 lbs. That's a lot of weight to haul through the woods. There's a reason most 10s come from the factory with sling swivels. BTW, the Ithaca was well balanced and handled nicely.Lighter 10s are available, but they do kick heavily.

IMO, the 10 is a special purpose piece that would see little use outside of geese for me.
