10/22 Essentials

I know there are tons of upgrades for this rifle but I'm really looking for the essentials. Spring this and pin that, I want the upgrades that go a long way. I put tech sights on it today and I'm planning on doing at least one Appleseed this summer. Really want that patch! Thanks.

I'm sure a lot of folk here will be glad to help you out. This site is fount of information.

You might also want to try:
www.rimfirecentral.com
They have *lots* of 10/22 information.

If you find anything that helps you out come back and share your results.

Which 10/22 did you get?

I modified the stock release myself with a file and saved my money on the VQ upgrade. Search around here and you can find pictures and instructions on how to do the mod.

I do think a hammer and sear upgrade is a must. I bought the Power Custom kit from my local Cabelas, and it took 15 minutes to install and dropped the trigger pull to about 2.5 lbs. Other than better sights like you've already installed, I'd spend the rest of your money shooting.

Get your barrel redone by one of the folks over at rimfirecentral, get a VQ or PC hammer or hammer and sear combo, lose the barrel band or relieve it enough that it doesn't contact the barrel and float the barrel in the stock (you don't need the adjustable block with a sporterweight carbine length barrel). Those 4 things will give you the biggest jump in accuracy. Oh and so will a scope.

Bolt release mod....take it or leave it. Get a poly bolt buffer, doesn't do much except take away some of the internal banging. All other upgrades gain you very very little at a time.

I would recommend getting some good mags, and CASES of ammo...

It has been many many years since I purchased any mags for a 10/22, but butler creek hot lip mags (25 round) have always worked. I think the last time I purchased mags was back in '93.... I also purchased cases of Remington thunderbolts, still working with that ammo as well. Functions flawlessly in the rifle/mags, though it is not as accurate as "match" ammo.

It's nice to come back from the range and immediately start reading about guns. :D

DaleA - Thanks for the site i'll check it out. I have the stock carbine in hardwood.

snipecatcher - I'm definitely going to start with this and work my way up. Thanks.

The power custom update looks great but scsov509 is right i'm gonna wait on that for now and really put some rounds through it first. I've only put about a brick through it.

Thanks for the info guys.

If appleseed is your goal I would say definitely install an auto bolt release ($9) and if your rifle didn't come with an extended mag release put one of those on as well ($5). Also make sure you put studs in the stock and 1 1/4"
sling swivels.

With those additions and a GI Web sling you're more than ready to go. The ole plain jane 10/22 is more than accurate enough as is for appleseed the rest is up to you to shoot straight !

The Volquartsen Target Hammer is your best bang for the buck. With just the hammer replaced ( kept the factory springs in ) it drop my trigger pull down to 3lbs. I tried the auto bolt release, but didn't like it, so I put the factory one back in. It was easier to release, but made it harder to lock open.

The hardest thing I tackled was reinstalling the bolt. I bought a tool for it made buy gunsmither that makes that job easier, it's not a must have item, for $16.00 it was worth it to me. It will also make installing your extractor easier.

If you go with a scope latter I really like the Talley light weight mounting system. I got the low set and they are perfect for a 33mm obj. scope.

The extended magazine release is a must.
Stay away from the Ram-Line 50 round mag. it simply does not work.
My RM 30 rounder has been in steady use for about 15 years, very reliable.

Like nemethem said the USGI web sling is a helpful addition and appleseed sells them at their online store. You will need to get 1 1/4" swivels. The things I consider essential on my 10/22 are the volquartsen auto bolt release, extended mag release (new 10/22's already come with extended mag release), and volquartsen extractor. All these upgrades are cheap and well worth it. If you are interested in replacing your stock it's not essential by any means but I was really pleased with the hogue overmolded stock I put on mine. Forend shape and overall fit make it very nice to handle.

I made my own extension mag release, I put in a new Volquartsen extractor, and a bolt buffer to keep my scope centered. That's all the mods I need, its a tack driver, and super reliable.
