i have a new rifle and am wondering what the difference is between a two piece and a one piece scope mount base.

the only rifle i got before this was used and had a 1 pece mount already so i did not bother changing it.

now i want to know; what is the advantage from one to the other?

thanks.

I'm not sure what the difference is, but my gunsmith gave me a thourough learnin' on the subject once. For my rifle he suggested a Redfield Jr. one-piece mount. He said it was compareable to the Leuopold offerings at a better price. I suppose that a one piece works better somehow. The scope should be mounted as close to the reciever as you can possibly get it though. I hope someone here knows more than I on this.

Disclaimer - I shoot benchrest and varmint rifles

I prefer either two-piece Weaver-style or a one-piece Weaver-style rail. A one-piece isn't going to stiffen up the action any - it just gives you a little more leeway in where you mount the scope. For varmint rifles, I prefer Leupold's QRW rings.

I DO NOT like the "turn in" rings.

Two piece might need to be shimmed to be exactly parallel to the scope tube, but a two piece may be a stronger mount, since most one piece mounts attach w/ three screws, and a two piece mount will attach with four. I think the difference is just asthetic. Just my .02$

ok. so i need to mount it as close to the reciever as possible. and it seems people feel the one piece mount is preferable to the 2 piece due to strength advantage.

any one have thoughts on the best place to get these mounts and rings at a good price? i know of cabela's shooting catalog [pricey] and also i know of midwayusa.com which seems to have good prices.

what i need is a 1" rings and base in nickel or silver as its going on a stainless rifle.

while i am at it i should say too that i want to get a Vari X II leupold so if any of you folks know where the best deal is let me know. thanks.

Well, a steel one-piece mount is certainly heavier than two-piece mounts.

I've used Weaver or Weaver-type mounts for a long, long time, and never had a problem. Many years, many rifles...

Nobody said that the one piece version was stronger. Some people may "feel" that it is stronger, but it isn't.

A one-piece mount has next to _NO_ strength advantage. Those little bitty screws ain't gonna do diddly. Ask an accuracy gunsmith, and they'll likely point you toward Weavers...

Get the two-piece weaver-style bases, make sure they're lined up right, get a quality set of rings, lap 'em, and you'll be forever happy.

My Leupold QRW rings hold zero when I remove and replace the scope. That's a good thing.
