1/14 twist 22-250 long range shooting

My current 22-250 has a 1/14 twist rate and i intend on shooting long range. I currently reload 55 grain soft point projectiles and am wondering what weight and type of projectile would be best for this purpose. I also shoot varmints and the projectile must cater for them too.

I never had much success with bullets over 55 grains in my Rem 22-250 with the 1-14 twist. You might try the newer A-Max or Ballistic Tip bullets to improve ballistics at long range.

My 14 twist .22-250 is normally limited to 55 grain bullets but will stabilze and shoot accurately with the 60 gr Hornady SP though not the longer HP.

I get best accuracy out of the 52 gr Sierra MK. I think the Hornady 52-55 gr V-max and A-max would be worth a try, also Berger in that weight range.

++++++++++++++1

I get best accuracy out of the 52 gr Sierra MK

Jim is right on here. I have been shooting 22-250 for about 45 years and hands down the 52 gr SMK is the best bullet I ever blasted down the tube.

That bullet with 38 gr H380 and magnum primers is near perfect.

That round also responds well with IMR 4064 and 4895. I do not have load data in front of me.

I have always gotten my best accuracy well below maximum velocities.

I am generally running around 3500fps based on load tables and not with instrumentation.

I have only changed barrels in my 700BDL in the last two years and I bought that rifle around 1976 or so.

Happy shooting!!

Does Sierra still make the 52-grain HBPT? That used to do horrible things to feral housecats at 300 yards, from my Swift. I guess about 3,800, and it was a tight-group critter.

not a huge fan of the 22-250... so take my advice for what it's worth...

butt... my father in law was a big hypervelocity cartridge fan, so I currently own 3 or 4 of them...

IMO the 55's are too long to stabilize very well with the 1 in 14" twist barrel, ( I never understood why they didn't use 1 in 12 twist barrels, or atleast upgrade once the heavier bullets became more popular ) ... I've personally had better luck with the lighter than 55 grain bullets... I agree as far as accuracy that the 52 grain MK hasbeen one of the better bullets in my rifles

Art,

They sure do. That was a bullet I used a lot to blast groundhogs. I still have a box or two. Price on the box is $4.80. . .:)

I have 2 friends in Nevada who like long rang shooting with their 22-250s. In fact, they had me re-barrel them with 1-8" twist barrels, and they shoot 75 grain bullets in them. They are getting very good results from 600 to 900 yards.
Rebarreling a bolt action is not hard to do, and not all that expensive either.
