007 Pays Homage to the M1911

007 has discarded his weak .32 PPK for a Walther P99, but in the newest Bond movie, "The World is Not Enough", 007 saves the day with an .45 mil-spec M1911. Shoots the villaness and storms the bad guys submarine with Browning's classic - Cool.

Good movie too - Comments ???

Its cool until he takes the bad guy hostage at gunpoint with the hammer down...Nice to see the Steyr TMP and FN P90s get their due, even if in the hands of the BGs.

Gotta disagree on that, George. Brosnan's two previous films were both better than TWINE, which suffered from uninteresting bad guys and reworked plot elements from previous films. IMHO, the best Bond film in terms of plot and action is "The Living Daylights" -- it had the best of the ski-patrol chases (there are about 7 Bond films with ski chases) and some great stuntwork hanging off the back of a C-130. I don't think Timothy Dalton got a fair shot at playing Bond, because everyone knew he was only holding the place till Brosnan got off his other contract.

As for the women, Sophie Marceau is a charmer (rent "D'artagnan's Daughter, a French film, for a real treat) but Denise Richards couldn't act her way out of a wet T-shirt, which is about her only redeeming quality in this film. She's not even that cute when you compare her to the general level of babe in Bond's history.

My favorite Bond film women are in "The Spy Who Loved Me" -- slinky Barbara Bach and the luscious Caroline Munro (how many women put on a belly dancer costume to fly a heliciopter gunship?). Too bad Sheena Easton was only seen singing the title song in "For Your Eyes Only" -- she would have made a heck of a Bond babe. (Trivia item: she's the only one ever seen on screen doing the theme song).

At least Bond now has a respectable handgun. Dude must have held the record for one-shot stops with a .32ACP Walther. In "Tomorrow Never Dies", he gets the Walther P99 from Colonel Wai Lin of the Chinese People's External Security Force, and says, "I asked Q to get me one of these." Say what? They give him a new BMW to wreck on every mission, and they can't afford one friggin' Walther? Or did the Brits take all the handguns away from the SIS, too?

Shows how closely I looked at the gun (or how much I know?) since I was looking at the women... I thought that was a Browning Hi-Power with walnut stocks that he was packing in the finale?!

Now I gotta go watch the movie again...

Take the long way home...

In the first scene, when Bond is posing as a bamker and he holds the 1911 to a BG's head, is the rear sight missing? It looked like the top of the slide was perfectly smooth when I watched it, but only in that view. Or is it just the small rear sight on the GI 1911A1? Although at contact range it probably wouldn't matter. If someone had the DVD they could look at the frame.

David Scott: "Denise Richards couldn't act her way out of a wet T-shirt, which is about her only redeeming quality in this film. She's not even that cute when you compare her to the general level of babe in Bond's history."

GTFOH. I bet she could too act her way out of a wet t-shirt. :)

Is nothing sacred in this world? First bond loses his Austin Martin for some silly German Car (I don't me that) and now he losses his PPK ? What is this world coming to. Next thing you know, he not gonna be for MI5 anymore. Or maybe in Mission Impossible 2; coming out two Fridays from now, the secretary will avow knowledge of the mission.

I don't have anything against the 1911, I love them it was my first handgun/only handgun but I'm a sucker for tradition.

as for denise richards not being able to act her way out of a wet t-shirt. you are sooo right, Teri Hatcher was a better bond girl. Denise Richards looked better like 2 years ago.

To MPower's point:

Gawd that bugs the hell out of me. Hammer down on a 1911 or a SAA for that matter. Girlfriend just laughs at my growling when I give technical critiques on movies and TV shows.

Just a note here for you Bond fans. I just go a new Springfield Govt. model .45 and the serial number is two sets of three numbers. The last set on my gun is 007.

Chink,
I'm with you! The car should be the Aston Martin. The gun should be the Walther PPK. Period. Oh sure, he could use others, but his personal choices? Nope.

reworked plot elements from previous films.

Isn't that part of what defines a Bond film? The same plot done the same each time, just different?

I haven't seen the latest movie yet, but on Bond in general I would suggest:
(1) GUN: 1911 is my personal favorite pistol, but it is not Bond.
(2) CAR: Definitely the Aston Martin. The only explanation for giving bond a German car is that there was a mole high up in MI6, whose arrival coincided neatly with the retirement of the original "M".
(3) BABE: Daniella Bianchi (as Tatiana Romanova) still makes my heart beat fastest.
Your Cousin Vinnie.

The best Bond gun, which never made it onscreen, was the ASP 9mm. Well suited to a fictional character.

Personally, I rather liked the "Quiller" series of spy novels and a TV show. Quiller didn't usually carry a pistol, but would use whatever came his way. Kind of a "McGuyver" before he was thought of.

Lots of opinions...
1. - I love BMWs. I relished every minute I had my 325i.
2. Sophie Marceau is a Goddess.
3. Dennise Richards doesnt need to act... Wet T shirt will do just fine. She is cheesy as Velveda - but so is a lot of stuff in Bond Flicks. She looks very good in that Lora Croft outfit - thankfully she didnt have many actual lines.
4. Walther Smalther... Bond uses the best weapons available when able. Remember the film when he used a chrome .44 wheel gun? Which one was that? Live and Let Die? The one where he fights the Voodoo Guy? How Un Tactical is that? :D

I liked this one the best because it was the least cartoonish. Almost realistic for a Bond Flick. GOLDENEYE takes a very Close 2nd.

Bond also drives a few other cars as well - There was quite a few Audi coups in one flick - the one where he smuggles a russian scientist out of some country in a HARRIER...
He has also driven I think a MUSTANG?
Not important... Auston Martins - especially ones at Jame's level would cost up near 1 million bucks - look up the Vantage coupe... Where as a BMW could be had for what? Upper 30s? The boy does crash a lot and maybe Q would give him the better cars if he could keep the shiney side up longer. Look at that slick little boat Q built! It wasnt for BOND! :D Next film we will see him in a FORD FOCUS!
Another reason this is a killer Bond film - John Clease!!!! Who Better to Replace Q? (rest in peace) Big Clease fan over here.

I also think Brosnan is the best Bond ever cast... Even better than Connary. Yes - I said that. And I'll stand by that.

George,

Better than Connary?!?!?!? You had me until then!

Hey - I know a guy who is a big Roger Moore fan...
I think he's nuts - but even he is free to have his opinion.
No, Connary was good - but I think Brosnans just better.
My Dad as the hole collection - I've seen all the Bonds many a time... Grew up on them.
Some of the older ones are just as cartoony as can be. I find those way too suger coated for my tastes.
