00 Buck and 000 Buck...Any Significant Difference?

What is the difference between a 9 pellet 00 buck load and an 8 pellet 000 buck...I don't need to know ballistics (I already know that according to Federal, they have the same velocities). My question is this: can one do anything that the other one can't? Any thoughts from the experts?

mathman the difference between 00 and 000 buck is triple has a larger caliber leadball thus it has one less ball than 00. 000 in my opinion is a better deer round just because the pellets are larger and probably pack a larger punch though either would knock a deer on its arss. neither are fit in my opinion for much other than deer or bear sized game because anything much smaller than a deer i think would be shredded to pieces by either round.

Yeah, I know that 00 Buck is .33 cal and 000 Buck is .36 cal...I was just kind of asking why have both? What does one do any better than the other. I mean, it seems to me that if they have the same velocity and 000 buck has the larger pellets, that would be the way to go...to have larger pellets at the expense of just one pellet...my point is, I guess, why would anyone buy 00 buck with 9 pellets as opposed to 000 buck with 8 pellets? Does my question make more sense now? :)

buck shot

I recon you could say ''bigger buck for the bang'', i used to know all that stuff and probally could remember it if i tried, i.e. amount of shot in different guages and all that, but i like the trip-ot .000 in my .410, its like (and no, i didnt caliper it either) 3-.40cal. balls, but its close as hell range stuff , speaking of any kind of accuracy at all cause we blasted some .000 thru it and man that stuff went everywhere!, i mean absolutly no consistancy at all!, i mean NONE, by god. It also was pretty expensive too, i've still got a bunch of it upstairs, incidently, i dont even know if i have seen and .00 (double) in .410, i mean if it's out there i aint seen it, but they probally do, if it can be loaded into a shell or caseing someone will do it, and sell it of course. But to get back on trac as per your question .00 shot is bigger than .000 shot, or less pellets, whatever. see ya

Just use 3" OOO...10 pellets.

Here are some payload stats:
2.75" OOO...568 grains
3.00" OOO...710 grains

2.75" OO.....549 grains (9 count)
2.75" OO.....732 grains (12 count)
3.00" OO.....915 grains (15 count)

@ 71 grains/pellet for OOO, and 61 gr for OO, penetration should be greater for OOO given equal velocity, however...

11.8% greater surface area presented by OOO somewhat offsets momentum increase of 14.8%.

If someone would just reshape the pellets into mini roundnoses with flat bases...

Knowing that each individual sees things slightly different (Einstein) I can only offer my perception ... I choose 00 for that extra projectile (1 more than 8 thus 12.5% more projectiles with which to make contact with the target) ... so I give up a little momentum (the 000 projectiles are slightly heavier ... you said same velocity 00, or 000) ... thus I suspect I give up a little range by using 00 in order to get that extra projectile ... a trade off it seems to me.

As I said, this is just my rationalization for using 00 instead of 000.:o

Good luck, and ...

Happy shooting !
